I’m Ricky Spears. My wife Denice and I write and curate the information you’ll find here at Life in Carolina Beach.

We’re making Carolina Beach our permanent home in 2026. I guess you could say I moved back—I spent a short stint here as a snowbird in 2012 and 2013, and something about Pleasure Island always stuck with me.

Now we’re permanent residents, learning the rhythms of island life for real.

This site is my public notebook — a place to document what I notice, what I learn, and what surprises me about Carolina Beach and Pleasure Island. I tend to ask a lot of questions and link to my sources. As I figure things out, I’ll share them here.
